(Not Very) New Lows

In 2009 I had this plan to do a blog where I just interviewed artists about hardcore shirts they'd illustrated. I did like 3 entries and then stopped keeping up with it, but anyway. Here's one of the interviews I did with Chris Morgado about the best New Lows shirts. Remember, this is from 2009 so some elements might not be accurate anymore.

The Wrong Side is one of my favorite hardcore bands, and I was even more stoked to find out that the singer, Chris Morgado was into drawing so I hunted him down. He's the artist behind a number of cool hardcore shirts, many of them I had before I even knew that he'd done them. I've done a sweet interview with him that'll definitely appear in a future issue of Drug Dogs. Anyway, the following is a discussion on the New Lows shirt above in Morgado's own words.

"I kind of hate to do shirt designs. It's sort of awkward, like layout wise I find it awkward. I never know just how big I can go or anything, and so I end up feeling like I'm doing the same big image with band name over/under it thing over and over. I vastly prefer doing fliers and record art…fliers especially, fliers are my absolute favorite to do…it's just less stressful knowing "ok, this is the space I've got, this is what I can work with, now fill it". And most of the time people don't really know exactly what they want, like I get told "we want something like what you did for Mental so just come up with something like what you did for them", which isn't the worst thing to get told by any stretch of the imagination, but it's kind of more stressful because even though I can do that kind of thing standing on my head, I have to worry about copying what I already did without actually repeating what I already did."

"A skinhead with a chain by me is going to look like a skinhead with a chain by me…well, more like it'll look like a poor copy of a skin by Sean Taggart (laughs)… no matter how I draw it; it's pretty much just asking me to swap out the band name. If that's really want someone wants, great, I'll do it, but it's cooler if someone has an idea that I can work with, or if it's a band
with a name or a vibe that I can latch on to."

"Like War Hungry, yeah those shirts look like they could just as easily be Mental shirts, but they're actually very specific to that band, I came up with those by just doodling around with the name “WAR HUNGRY” and the images that put in my head. I never would have come up with those designs for Mental, those designs just wouldn't exist."

"With New Lows, I've done four shirts, and it's been 50/50 as to P-boy knowing what he wants and me just coming up with something on my own. The Shining shirt was his idea, and the Minor Threat  rip off. He left the details pretty much up to me so far as how to execute them, but those were both his idea. The Albert Packer shirt and the octopus sex shirt were mine. It was kind of a last minute deal, they needed some shirts for Sound and Fury and P wanted something new but didn't have any ideas on tap. So I kind of just brainstormed, just like... inserting random California and ocean related words into Google, and eventually I ended up googling octopus and just started thinking, "hardcore design concepts have gotten pretty tame, hardcore in general is pretty tame now, I wonder if an octopus porn shirt would get any reaction". So I started googling Japanese octopus porn and printing out pics that I thought would make good reference. This was all done at work, naturally. So I had all these print outs and I just started sketching shit out and seeing what I could combine with what, and one of the pics was by this artist Toshio Saeki, in fact if you look at my actual drawing, it says "with a nod to Saeki" under my signature, that's how much of his idea I felt like I actually took. It was a guy fucking a girl who was an octopus below the waist. I thought it would make a good shirt if you stripped it down to just the guy and the girl, maybe not as nuts as doing one of the ones where the octopus is tentacle fucking a girl but probably easier to make work on the front of a shirt. But I didn't want to just have it be a tracing or an exact copy. I had just done a drawing of Death smoking a bong for this band that never paid me or used the design, so I had that on my desk. So I redrew it with Death in the place of the guy, and a few drafts later I was satisfied enough to do a nice little bit of old school cut and paste…I do pretty much everything old school cut and paste…I only use Photoshop for minor touch ups like removing a line here or there to get the band name on there."

"What I was thinking of with the layout was this Fugazi bootleg shirt a kid I knew in high school had that just had the band name over a black and white photo, though when I was doing the shirt I was remembering it as being underneath."

War Hungry : The 10 Best Songs (A Biased and Subjective Discussion)

Illustration: Dylan Chadwick.  A failed War Hungry shirt design
Whether I knew it at the time or not, War Hungry blew onto the scene with everything I wanted in a band. Great riffs culled distinctly from legit heavy metal, without being all corny or self-referential like some dumb Southern Lord beard band. I'm remarkably easy to please.

"Riffs is riffs" as they say, and whether hardcore, metal or some other shit, them's far more important than a band's mosh quotient. I hate quoting Stigma so much (do I?), but I'd say each one of these selections speaks for itself.

Stay tuned for the forthcoming "biased and subjective anecdotes on War Hungry" blog feat:

  •  The unfortunate time I bugged them (via snail mail) to let me do a shirt graphic for them
  •  The claim that their name is a reference to Lord of the Rings
  • Pics and recollections of the time I saw them cover Black Sabbath's "Into the Void" for 8 seconds
  • My favorite War Hungry shirt ever

Here are my top 10 Wungy tracks ever. No particular order (except chronologically), these are all bangers. Feel free to write to me and tell me I'm wrong for not including _____. (You can't).

2004 Demo Tape
1. Plain Pine Box
Here's some titular greatness with a death obsession, i.e., the hardest TITLE of any War Hungry track period. Many riff changes here, but this author's fav comes at 1:20.

2. Concrete Jungle
Check out 0:23 when the riff gets just a little spacey. Peace to any band that can work in this many time n' tempo changes and without to twitchy Level-Plane records bullshit. Was working a Guns n' Roses lyric into the chorus a good decision, or a great decision?

War is In demo tape

3. Echoes
The beatdown riff that just keeps giving. When the rhythm section drops in at 0:30, this cut jumps from "heavy AF" to "hold up, that bassline...." Try and listen just a-once bucky. You cain't.

Divine/Demonic 7"
4. Labors of Hercules
I once read this was Hoodrack's favorite song to play live, but this was from a blog posted a few years before the LP. I only saw them twice, but they opened with it both times. "Double DEAL-ARR!" Peace to tracks that stay hard even as they're fading out.

5. Beg & Plead
Heavy as hell (but that's a good thing) but pretty standard HC meat n' taters rockin...til 1:30 that is. The track slows to a GD crawl, and the sinewy riffing that unfolds around it must be experienced aurally to be adequately comprehended.

Return to Earth EP

6. Master of Mankind
Return to Earth (and most 1917 releases) already seem to be overlooked by contemporary core history. Methinks it's because of Guns Up or because the vocals got awful "Weiland-y" here. Was this that era when hardcore dudes were trying to get into Velvet Revolver? Not sure, but I still dug every track. It even edged out "Tip Your Scale" for containing the lyric "my friends are wicked and worthless" and the riff that kicks in directly after.

Cold World/War Hungry split

7. Final Hour
From the "good side of the Cold World split" comes the band's most satisfying song. "Send me all your horsemen, make me believe," "send me your wrath, I pity your weak" and that piano and that riff. Oh, that riff. (1:25 if u real).

Bad Seed/War Hungry Split

8. Empire of Idols Though the song did appear on the S/T LP, my fav is the recording which appeared on the Bad Seed split. It showcased that cool Danzig approach to singing, but also that ultra freaky fade out sample which prompted a heated debate with my family. Is it the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? They say yes. I say maybe.

S/T LP

9. Broken on the Wheel
Lordy, when this LP dropped I wouldn't shut up about it. I even begged the staff at the magazine who employed me to let me write about it. The song summed up everything I loved about the band, including their awesome new gee-tar lineup, in just under 3 minutes. Note that little bit of groove, otherworldly soloing and the most insane vocal reverb of 2011 IMO.

10. Shift  Yes it's a hardass track. Let's talk about the keyboard/Stone Temple Pilots "Wicked Garden" groove that goes down at 1:30. No wimps, please.

Greg Mental Interview Pt. V (This is the end)

The end of the interview. Where I asked about art and stuff, and got the best pull-quote.

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5

Every Lockin Out release has a discernible "aesthetic" to it. I know you've done some of that artwork. Is that just another hobby?
I'd love to be doing art for a living. I went to a tech high school and took design as my "shop" class. I also graduated from Art Insitute of Boston. Design and art are things I love, but unfortunately, they're just hobbies right now.

Doodling? Computer stuff? What's your favorite?
I do everything before finishing a project. I'll doodle, paint, fuck around on the computer. Whatever it takes to come up with an idea I like. Then I just bang it out. I'm really hoping to do more shirts for bands and the label this year if I can find some free time.

Would you ever do art outside of hardcore? Would you do art for bands that aren't Lockin Out bands?
I did a design for Detroit Birds. I dunno if I've really done much other art for bands not on the label. I don't think so.

Oh, so my idiot friend wants me to ask you about the Bum Rush EP.
It's coming out soon.

On LOC?

Well, you've got to be pretty stoked on hardcore to still be working so close with hardcore bands.
Oh, of course. I'm still stoked on hardcore but at this point, I'm not driving super far to see a show or anything like that. It's just because of my real-life obligations and schedule though and the lack of bands that I'm really interested in, rather than not being stoked on hardcore itself.

What Non-LOC bands are you still interested in?
War Hungry is always dope. I like Waste Management, Step Forward, Dead Black. That's all I can really come up with off the dome.

The "jaded hardcore dude" is such a common trope you know? It hardly seems applicable to you though.
Hell no man. I still get in the pit if I'm feeling it. I'm a hardcore kid you know? That's just what it is. If I'm at a club grinding on a fine 'ho I've still got the same grin on my face that I'll have at a show getting ignorant. I love hardcore. I love underground shit. It's always been attractive to me. I'm a fuck-up and love hardcore because it's a bunch of fuck-ups.

W is for War Hungry

Back in the days before Tee Til Death, I got this hairbrained idea to do a blog about hardcore shirts. I would track down the artist, ask them a bunch of questions...it only lasted for two posts (you can still see the remnants at jerkswithcoolshirts.blogspot.com) but it was cool. Here's one I did with Spoiler regarding a War Hungry shirt that was made in 2006, but I obtained in 2007. I thought it was kind of interesting and since this blog gets SLIGHTLY more traffic, thought I'd leave it here.

--------------------------
Yes I could've used a stock photo from the internet, but I decided to use MY shirt

So first things first, with the front design...I want to know, to the best of your knowledge how the exchange went in drafting the shirt.
Any War Hungry shirt I did was because of Hoodrack and me brainstorming over AIM. We'd come up with the best shit together. He always had great ideas but couldn't draw them. I don't remember who came up with what, but we decided they were going to have a mascot like Eddie for Iron Maiden, so that's the dude on top, cursing the world.

Hoodrack wanted a really metal looking shirt, but I made it borderline fantasy metal. I got a few of the ideas out of an art book. I wanted it to represent a bunch of different species being at war with each other, you know, “war hungry”, and their mascot standing over it all. Kind of a nerdy fantasy-land version of the real world.

It definitely reminds me of like...Jason and the Argonauts. Have you ever seen that? It has that theme...
I've never really heard of that before. Probably never aired in Europe where I grew up. Argonauts sounds pretty fantasy metal though.

Well War Hungry definitely has that kind of lyrical biz going on in their songs...like "Labors of Hercules" and stuff so maybe that helped…
I didn't go over any lyrics for this shirt, but maybe Hoodrack got some ideas from it. I'm sure it's all connected in his mind.

On the back design, it's kind of a remake of an old psychedelic flier that I've seen...with the skeleton holding the peace sign. I've seen it used on an old flier....I remember you telling me that your Mom was kind of a hippie and your Dad was a metal head...is that where you got the design from?
Yea that's from a Grateful Dead flyer, on the original it's a lady holding the sign. Hoodrack sent it to me. It's not actually related to my parents though it could very well have been. I don't think they were into the Dead though, my mom is more into shit like Blue Cheer, the Who, and Black Sabbath. Way cooler than most hippies. But yea, there was plenty of weird psychedelic art and record covers in my house growing up, so that's why I like to incorporate it every now and then.
